As time permits I will add information on all the sensors and any related terms needed to understand what all those d@mn parts are in your engine.

A

Air/Fuel Ratio
The ratio of air to gasoline by weight in the fuel mixture drawn into the engine

Atmospheric Pressure
The pressure on the Earth's surface caused by the of the air in the atmosphere. At sea level, this pressure is 14.7 psi at 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

B

C

CYL Sensor
The Cylinder Sensor is used to detect the position of N0. 1 cylinder. The signal is used to trigger the sequential fuel injection.

D

E

ECU
Electronic Control Unit. The functions of the ECU include;

  • Starting control.
  • Injector control.
  • Electronic air control
  • Ignition timing control
  • Fuel pump control
  • Fuel cut-off control
  • Fail safe.
  • Back up system.
  • Self diagnostics.

H

I

IMA Sensor
Idle Mixture Sensor maintains the correct air/fuel ratio at idle.

J

K

L

M

MAP Sensor
This sensor converts Manifold Air Pressure readings into electrical voltage signals and sends them to the ECU

N

O

Oxegen Sensor (O2 Sensor)
The Oxygen Sensor detects the oxygen content in the exhaust gas and sends a signal to the ECU. The ECU uses this signal to control the fuel injector duration, maintaining the stoichiometric air/fuel ratio of 14.7:1

P

PA sensor
Atmospheric Pressure Sensor converts atmospheric pressure into voltage signals. The ECU modifies basic injector duration to compensate for changes in atmospheric pressure.

Q

R

S

T

TAS Sensor (or TPS Sensor)
Throttle Angle Sensor translates the postion of the throttle plate to an electricla signal. The signal is near 0 at idle and increases to just under 5 volts at WOT (Wide Open Throttle).

TA Sensor
Intake Air Temperature Sensor works like the TW sensor but has a reduced thermal capacity for quicker responce.

TW Sensor
Coolant Temperature Sensor is used to measure the differences in the coolant temperature.

U

V

VSS
Vehicle Speed Sensor is used by the ECU as well as the cruise control and automatic transaxle control units.

W

WOT
Wide Open Throttle. When the gas pedal is fully depressed and the throttle body plate is in the wide open position.
